Air Serbia has strengthened its long-haul network by gaining access to Russian airspace. As a result, the airline can now fly directly between Belgrade and Shanghai using the Trans-Siberian route. This change helps Air Serbia reduce flight duration and improve overall efficiency.

Previously, flights took longer due to indirect routing through Central Asia. Now, with the new approval, Air Serbia can avoid these detours. Therefore, it can offer quicker, more fuel-efficient service to one of China’s busiest cities.

The Shanghai route began in January 2025 and replaced the older Tianjin route. Since then, Air Serbia has focused on connecting with major Chinese markets like Guangzhou and Shanghai.

Because Serbia is not part of the EU, Air Serbia avoids airspace restrictions over Russia. While most Western carriers fly longer paths, Air Serbia moves through Russia without barriers. Hence, it gains a unique advantage in the Asia-Europe corridor.

Meanwhile, Chinese airlines continue growing their European presence using similar access to Russian airspace. They benefit from shorter travel times and reduced operating costs. Therefore, competition in this market remains intense.

However, Air Serbia’s latest move positions it to compete more effectively. With shorter routes, it can increase efficiency and possibly add new destinations. This opportunity comes at a crucial time, as demand for China-Europe flights rises.

Going forward, Air Serbia may explore schedule enhancements and route expansion. With direct access over Russia, the airline can now build a stronger Asian network. Ultimately, this decision gives Air Serbia a vital lead in long-haul travel strategy.
