Alaska Airlines appointed John Wiitala as Vice President of Maintenance and Engineering. Wiitala will oversee the airline’s fleet operations and ensure safety compliance. Alaska Airlines operates a fleet of over 237 Boeing aircraft. Wiitala will maintain top safety standards and regulatory compliance across various maintenance bases.
Wiitala brings 34 years of experience to Alaska Airlines. He led key initiatives in fleet operations and engineering at United Airlines. He managed United’s technical operations and played a crucial role in the airline’s fleet growth. Wiitala oversaw the expansion from 450 to nearly 1,000 aircraft. His leadership helped integrate the United and Continental fleets after their merger.
At Alaska Airlines, Wiitala will lead line maintenance, airframe and engine repairs, quality assurance, and fleet reliability projects. He will guide fleet initiatives to support the airline’s global expansion. With his experience, Wiitala will strengthen Alaska Airlines’ reputation for operational excellence.
Wiitala started his aviation career in 1988. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Iowa. He has also served on boards that promote aviation careers.
As Alaska Airlines grows, Wiitala’s leadership will support its mission to maintain operational excellence and safety across its expanding network.
