Alaska Airlines is set to enhance its summer schedule with a historic expansion. The airline will introduce the Boeing 737 MAX 8 on its northernmost route, connecting Anchorage and Utqiaġvik. Starting June 12, 2025, the daily service will run until August 19, offering passengers a more efficient and modern travel experience.
This marks a significant shift in the airline’s operations. Previously, Alaska Airlines operated this route with Boeing 737-800s and 737-700s. The return of the 737 MAX 8 brings improved fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. Notably, no other U.S. airline competes on this route, solidifying Alaska Airlines’ dominance in the region.
Alaska Airlines continues to strengthen its fleet with newer aircraft. The airline recently introduced the 737 MAX 8 and has placed orders for 15 more. With a three-class configuration, the aircraft accommodates 159 passengers, ensuring a balanced mix of comfort and capacity.
Meanwhile, Prudhoe Bay/Deadhorse remains the second northernmost destination for the Boeing 737 MAX. Alaska Airlines occasionally operates the 737 MAX 9 on this route, mainly for charter services. However, select scheduled flights are available in March and April 2025. The 737 MAX 9 offers more seating capacity, accommodating 178 passengers.
The airline is also preparing for the arrival of the Boeing 737 MAX 10. Initially expected in 2025, deliveries have now been pushed to 2026. While waiting, Alaska Airlines will retire its Boeing 737-900 fleet, streamlining its operations.
Despite delays in aircraft deliveries, the airline remains focused on expansion and efficiency. By upgrading its northernmost routes, Alaska Airlines reinforces its commitment to providing passengers with modern, fuel-efficient flights.
