Alaska & Delta Air Lines Face Legal Challenge Over Pollution

Alaska & Delta Air Lines now face a class action lawsuit over pollution near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). Local property owners filed the lawsuit, accusing the airlines and the Port of Seattle of causing harmful pollution that affects nearby residents. The plaintiffs claim the pollution has harmed their health, damaged property, and caused deaths.

Residents living within a five-mile radius of the airport filed the lawsuit, calling the area the “Contamination Zone.” More than 300,000 people live in the zone. The plaintiffs argue that pollution from the airport, especially from the airlines, has caused serious health problems. Residents suffer from high rates of asthma, heart disease, and respiratory issues. They also face higher cancer rates and shorter life expectancy. Babies born in the zone often have lower birth weights or are born prematurely.

The lawsuit gained momentum when a federal judge denied the airlines’ motion to dismiss. The plaintiffs targeted Alaska & Delta Air Lines because they operate around 80% of the flights at SEA. As a result, these airlines contribute the most pollution. The lawsuit claims they release hazardous pollutants, including heavy metals and chemicals, at levels exceeding health and safety limits.

The airlines and the Port of Seattle argue that federal agencies like the FAA and EPA regulate flight paths and emissions. They assert they comply with these regulations. However, the plaintiffs argue that these rules don’t address the harm caused to local residents, particularly vulnerable communities.

The case continues, but the airlines face an uncertain future. This lawsuit highlights the ongoing conflict between corporate interests and environmental justice. Local residents demand accountability for the pollution they endure.
