American Airlines has launched a strict crackdown on a hidden marketplace where flight attendants sold trips for cash. The airline previously warned its staff about the practice and has now enforced penalties. This action follows months of concern about the misuse of its trip bidding system.
The carrier operates a seniority-based bidding system that favors veteran crew members. They usually secure long-haul routes to international cities, while junior attendants handle less desirable domestic flights. However, some senior staff turned this system into an underground market. They collected premium trips and then swapped them for money through coded messages.
American Airlines issued an internal reminder earlier this year. It stated that trips belong to the company and not to individuals. The airline also made it clear that cash trades violate its business standards. Despite that, some crew members continued offering trips with code words like “cookies” and “hugs.” This created a black market within the airline’s system and raised fairness concerns among employees.
The crackdown began after evidence showed that attendants exchanged trips for direct payments. Recently, American Airlines dismissed a Chicago-based flight attendant. Industry observers expect more terminations as the airline moves to end the practice. The decision has already fueled tension between management and unions that believe the punishment goes too far.
Other U.S. carriers handle this matter differently. Airlines such as Alaska and JetBlue have no strict ban on selling trips. Southwest tolerates coded trip swaps without major action. However, both Delta and United treat the practice as illegal and enforce strict discipline. This inconsistency across airlines makes the issue even more complex for crews.
American Airlines wants to protect the integrity of its bidding process. The airline also aims to ensure that trip assignments remain fair and transparent. Its decision reflects a strong stance against side deals that undermine its scheduling system.
