American Airlines is stepping up its fight against skiplagging, a ticketing loophole that passengers use to cut costs. This strategy involves booking a cheaper flight with a layover at the intended destination and skipping the final leg. However, with airlines enforcing stricter rules, travelers now face serious risks, including permanent bans.
Recently, a passenger attempted to check in for an American Airlines flight but was flagged due to a suspicious itinerary. Since their ID matched the layover city, the airline agent questioned their intentions. As a result, the traveler had to decide whether to continue the journey or risk penalties. Although they considered backing out, they ultimately exited at the layover stop, fully aware of the possible consequences.
Because skiplagging disrupts airline operations, American Airlines continues to tighten its monitoring systems. The airline argues that this practice affects revenue, seat availability, and flight planning. Moreover, passengers caught skiplagging may face rerouted flights, baggage complications, and automatic cancellations. Some have even been placed on a “Do Not Fly” list, making future travel difficult.

Since airlines are implementing stronger enforcement, skiplagging is no longer a simple money-saving trick. Instead, passengers must weigh short-term savings against long-term travel restrictions. As this strategy becomes riskier, American Airlines remains committed to closing loopholes and maintaining control over its ticketing policies.
