American Airlines is strengthening its presence in New York by launching new routes from LaGuardia Airport in summer 2025. The airline will introduce a seasonal Saturday-only service to Myrtle Beach International Airport. Additionally, it will restart its twice-weekly flights to Charleston after a long pause since the COVID-19 pandemic.
American Airlines last operated flights between LaGuardia and Myrtle Beach before merging with US Airways in 2009. Since then, Delta Air Lines and Spirit Airlines have dominated this route. Passenger demand for this connection has surged, with nearly 300 daily travelers as of late 2024. Fares have also dropped due to increasing competition, making this route more attractive for passengers. American Airlines currently holds a small market share through connecting flights but aims to change that with this direct service. The airline’s first flight departs on June 14, 2025, at 9:00 AM, reaching Myrtle Beach by 11:04 AM.
Alongside Myrtle Beach, American Airlines is also bringing back its LaGuardia to Charleston flights. The airline previously suspended this route, but growing demand has led to its revival. Delta Air Lines currently dominates, operating multiple flights daily. JetBlue once competed but exited the market after the Northeast Alliance ended. With fewer players in the space, American Airlines sees an opportunity to reenter and capture demand.
Although passenger traffic on the LaGuardia-Charleston route declined in 2024, average fares increased, showing strong revenue potential. More than half of bookings originate from New York, while Charleston travelers make up the rest. Delta continues to grow its dominance, while Spirit Airlines remains the second-largest player. American Airlines’ return will shake up the competition and offer travelers more options.
By expanding these routes, American Airlines is reinforcing its position in the New York market. With summer travel demand rising, the airline is set to offer passengers more direct flights and improved connectivity.
