American Airlines has launched a legal fight against Chicago, and the airline industry is watching. Therefore, this lawsuit could shift the power balance at O’Hare International Airport. Chicago reallocated gates at O’Hare, but American Airlines believes the move unfairly favors United Airlines. As a result, the airline’s operations could suffer major setbacks at its key hub.
Originally, both airlines signed a 2018 lease agreement to ensure balanced gate distribution. However, American Airlines now argues that Chicago breached this deal by reallocating gates unequally.
Meanwhile, the city granted United more gates while reducing American’s count, sparking strong opposition. Since gates control routes and staffing, this change threatens competitive equity at the airport. American Airlines points to three new gates in Terminal 3, finished in March 2025, as overlooked. Because the city excluded these from gate usage data, American claims the realignment lacks fairness.
Moreover, the lawsuit seeks to stop the changes before October 1, when the new plan starts. Therefore, the airline hopes a court order will pause the reallocation and trigger an independent review. So far, Chicago has not released an official statement. Still, insiders say the city might defend the change using operational data. However, public concerns now grow over transparency in managing taxpayer-funded airport expansions.
Clearly, this isn’t just about gate numbers—it affects travel choices, pricing, and airline strategy. Furthermore, if United gains more dominance, other airlines may lose space at premium terminals.
