American Airlines’ New Flagship Suite Gets DOT Approval

American Airlines has received approval from the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) for its new Flagship Suite business class seats. The department confirmed that the seating complies with the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA), ensuring accessibility for passengers with mobility needs.

The approval applies to American Airlines’ Boeing 777-300ER and 787-9 aircraft, featuring the upgraded business class suites. However, the airline must seek DOT approval for any future seat configuration changes on these aircraft. Additionally, employees and contractors handling passenger transfers must complete specialized training. The airline will also maintain training records for three years and report passenger transfer complaints to the DOT every quarter.

Meanwhile, Airbus continues working on the certification of its A321XLR, which will include new premium seating. However, the company has yet to receive regulatory approval for its mini-suites on this aircraft. Airbus applied for an exemption in early 2024, but the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not yet responded.

American Airlines first announced its Flagship Suite in 2022, planning to install it on its A321XLR and 787-9 deliveries. The airline also intends to retrofit its 777-300ER aircraft with these upgraded seats. The new suite offers more privacy, increased storage, and a lounge-style seating option for a premium experience. The airline expects to introduce the new seats later this year and begin seeing benefits from them in 2025.

By 2026, American Airlines aims to expand its premium seating by over 45%, enhancing passenger comfort on long-haul flights. The airline continues to refine its business-class offerings, making premium travel more comfortable and luxurious.
