American Airlines recently suspended all flights to Haiti following a bullet-related incident that affected one of its planes. The suspension of the Miami to Port-au-Prince route, which American Airlines announced, will remain effective until mid-February to ensure passenger safety amid ongoing security concerns in the region.
This decision followed the detection of bullet damage on an American Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 during a post-flight inspection. The aircraft had completed its journey from Port-au-Prince to Miami, and upon inspection, officials found bullet damage on its exterior. With safety being the airline’s top priority, American Airlines opted to halt its services to Haiti, giving ample time to work with authorities on an investigation. American Airlines emphasized that this choice prioritizes both safety and operational caution.
Additional incidents involving other airlines raised similar concerns. A Spirit Airlines plane was redirected to the Dominican Republic after gunfire near Port-au-Prince. JetBlue Airways also reported a bullet striking one of its planes, adding to the urgency of the situation. These incidents prompted heightened precautions for all flights between the United States and Haiti, including a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ruling restricting flights in Haitian airspace below 10,000 feet and halting US civilian flights for the next 30 days.
The affected American Airlines aircraft, registered as N302SA, reportedly continued operating additional flights before the bullet damage was discovered. After returning to Miami, it completed flights to the US Virgin Islands and Washington, DC, before grounding for further inspection. The airline continues coordinating with local and international authorities to safeguard all routes to the region, preparing for possible future changes in the schedule.
With these increased safety measures, American Airlines shows its commitment to passenger and crew well-being. This pause in service will provide a closer look into security risks, emphasizing caution in high-risk zones. American Airlines has prioritized passenger safety throughout this challenging situation.
