Travelers often worry about lost luggage, but American Airlines has introduced a solution. The airline now allows passengers to share their AirTag location, making it easier to find misplaced bags. This move follows the growing trend of airlines adopting smart tracking technology to assist customers.
Passengers can use Apple’s Share Item feature on iOS 18.2 or later to generate a link with their AirTag’s location. They then share this link with the airline if their bag goes missing. To start the claim, they scan a QR code at the baggage office and provide details about their luggage. This streamlined process aims to reduce stress for travelers dealing with lost baggage.
Lost luggage has always been a challenge for airlines, especially as global travel continues to expand. While the majority of checked bags arrive safely, a small percentage still gets misplaced. A study from 2022 revealed that major US airlines mishandled over 684,000 bags in just three months. American Airlines claims to lose less than 1% of checked bags, reuniting passengers with their belongings within a day. By integrating AirTag tracking, the airline hopes to speed up recovery times even more.
American Airlines is not alone in using AirTag tracking. United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Lufthansa Group airlines already offer similar services. Other carriers, including Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, and Turkish Airlines, have also embraced this technology. With more airlines adopting smart tracking solutions, travelers can now experience a more reliable way to locate lost bags.
Air travel has become more complex, but technology is helping solve long-standing issues. By allowing passengers to share AirTag data, American Airlines provides a faster and more efficient way to recover lost luggage. As more airlines implement this feature, travelers can expect a smoother and less stressful journey.
