Business travel remains a critical aspect of the global economy, connecting companies with clients and opportunities. However, the landscape of corporate travel is shifting, influenced by post-pandemic realities. American Express’s latest Amex Trendex report sheds light on these changes, focusing on emerging destinations, blended travel, and the role of technology.
Emerging Business Travel Destinations
Traditionally, cities like New York, London, and Tokyo dominate business travel. However, the Amex Trendex report highlights a shift toward less conventional destinations. Cities such as Princeton, New Jersey; Durham, North Carolina; Southwest Michigan; Sacramento, California; and Honolulu, Hawaii, are gaining traction. These cities are becoming business hubs due to industry growth, educational institutions, and infrastructure development.
For instance, Princeton is emerging as a leader in AI research, while Sacramento is attracting tech talent through new airline routes and airport expansions. Similarly, Durham’s tech boom continues, and Southwest Michigan is being recognized for its blend of corporate opportunities and cultural richness. Honolulu is increasingly popular for corporate retreats, offering a unique mix of exotic charm and modern conveniences.
Blended Travel: A Growing Trend
The Amex Trendex report also highlights the rise of blended travel, where business trips are combined with leisure activities. This trend is particularly popular among younger generations like Gen Z and Millennials. Notably, 80% of business travelers enjoy exploring their destinations, and those who blend business with leisure are more cost-conscious, with 85% reporting that they seek out savings.
However, there’s a disconnect between companies and travelers regarding responsibility for the personal portion of these trips. While 80% of companies cover both aspects, only 55% of travelers believe they should be responsible for the personal part, indicating a need for clearer communication and policies.
Prioritizing Comfort in Travel
Comfort is increasingly important to business travelers, with many willing to pay out of pocket for upgrades. The report finds that 77% of travelers have paid for a hotel or airfare upgrade themselves, with Millennials and Gen Z leading this trend. Additionally, 80% of travelers are more excited about trips when they can utilize airline or hotel loyalty perks, though there’s often a gap between what travelers want and what companies cover.
The Role of AI in Business Travel
Technology, particularly AI, is playing a growing role in business travel. The Amex Trendex report notes that 82% of companies now use AI to manage travel, up from 69% last year. AI is used for various tasks, including policy management, booking, and providing travel recommendations. As AI integration continues, there’s a growing need to train employees on how to use these tools effectively.
The Evolving Landscape of Business Travel
Business travel is not just recovering but evolving. New destinations are emerging, blended travel is on the rise, and AI is reshaping how companies approach travel. American Express, with its long history, continues to lead in providing innovative solutions for today’s changing business travel needs.
