Avelo Airlines Faces Backlash as It Closes Sonoma County Base for Deportation Focus

Avelo Airlines has decided to close its Sonoma County base, marking a dramatic shift in the airline’s operations. After just one year at Sonoma County Airport (STS), Avelo now focuses on deportation flights. This change follows its new partnership with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which has raised concerns among local residents and leaders.

The airline will stop all services at Sonoma County Airport and, instead, shift its deportation flight operations to Arizona. Avelo agreed to run charter flights for deportation purposes as part of its new contract with DHS. As a result, this move has generated mixed reactions from the community, with many questioning the airline’s commitment to the region’s values. Additionally, locals fear the impact on the area’s economy.

Local officials have expressed disappointment, particularly due to the potential effects on the county’s already struggling economy, especially in tourism. While the loss of the airline’s base could harm local businesses and job security, Avelo remains confident in its decision. The airline believes deportation flights will offer long-term stability, enabling it to continue scheduled passenger services while retaining over 1,100 jobs.

Avelo Airlines will shut down its operations at Sonoma County Airport by May 1, 2025. Although the airline will stop using Sonoma as a base, it will continue operating a few passenger flights to popular destinations. This decision to reduce operations at Sonoma County stems not only from low demand but also from financial struggles, in addition to the new DHS contract.

The community has grown increasingly concerned about the ethical implications of Avelo’s shift to deportation flights. Therefore, as the airline redefines its role in the region, it will face ongoing scrutiny from residents who are worried about the long-term effects on both the local economy and the region’s values.
