Sun Country Airlines is making significant changes to its summer schedule in 2025 by discontinuing five seasonal routes from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP). This decision stems from underwhelming performance and low customer demand for these routes, which were previously offered in earlier years.
The affected routes include Asheville, North Carolina; Billings, Montana; Cleveland, Ohio; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Omaha, Nebraska. These cancellations indicate that the airline reassesses its offerings regularly to optimize its network based on passenger interest.
While the cancellation of these routes seems disheartening, it reflects the airline’s ongoing strategy to enhance efficiency. Interestingly, the Asheville route’s cancellation comes with vague reasoning related to hurricane recovery. Despite this, Sun Country has not elaborated on the specific challenges faced.
Passengers accustomed to these routes will find alternatives available through Delta Air Lines, which provides flights to Asheville, Billings, Cleveland, and Omaha. Additionally, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta also serve Colorado Springs. However, the reduction in competition may lead to increased fares for travelers.
On a brighter note, Sun Country continues to expand its route network. Recently, it launched flights connecting MSP with Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in New Hampshire and Monterey Regional Airport in California. The airline is even exploring new focus cities, potentially extending its reach into South America.
The airline’s strategy emphasizes maximizing existing resources, as senior management expressed confidence in the current fleet, planning to utilize these older models for at least another 15 years. In conclusion, despite the route cuts, Sun Country Airlines remains committed to growth and adapting to market demands.
