Korean Air is making a bold move to enhance its fleet by selecting GE Aerospace’s cutting-edge GEnx and GE9X engines. This decision follows the airline’s agreement to acquire 20 Boeing 777-9s and up to 30 787-10s. The deal also includes a comprehensive service agreement for engine maintenance and overhaul. With this partnership, Korean Air becomes the first airline in South Korea to adopt the GE9X engine.
The GEnx engine family has proven its reliability since its launch in 2011. These engines have accumulated over 62 million flight hours. Today, more than 3,600 units are in operation, powering two-thirds of all 787 aircraft. The GE9X engine, on the other hand, stands as the world’s most powerful and fuel-efficient commercial aircraft engine. Designed exclusively for the Boeing 777X family, it reduces fuel consumption by 10% compared to its predecessor.
Sustainability remains a key focus for Korean Air. The GEnx and GE9X engines support Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blends, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to eco-friendly aviation. This initiative aligns with global efforts to cut carbon emissions and promote greener air travel.
Korean Air has long trusted GE Aerospace to power its fleet. The airline already operates various GE Aerospace and CFM-powered aircraft, including the GE90-110B/115B, LEAP-1B, and CFM56-7B engines. It also utilizes advanced flight data monitoring technology to improve safety and efficiency.
With this strategic investment, Korean Air strengthens its position as a leader in aviation. By adopting the latest engine technology, the airline enhances operational performance while prioritizing sustainability. This move not only improves efficiency but also ensures a superior experience for passengers.
