Delta Air Lines is set to expand its flight capacity between Atlanta and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The airline will introduce Boeing 767-300ER aircraft on this popular route, which has traditionally featured smaller narrowbody planes. This change begins next month and will continue for the coming months.
Delta leads in both flight frequencies and seat availability on the route. However, the introduction of widebody jets marks a significant upgrade. Starting December 10th, Delta will operate a daily Boeing 767-300ER flight between Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU). This new aircraft will complement the airline’s existing fleet of 737-900ERs and 757-200s, which currently serve the route.
Delta confirmed the schedule change last week, adding 299 flights in December. The Boeing 737-900ER, with 235 flights, will cover the majority of frequencies. Meanwhile, Delta removed over 25% of the 757-200 flights originally scheduled. The new Boeing 767-300ER will operate 26 flights, adding 702 seats compared to the previous plan. Each 767-300ER will carry 226 passengers, offering 27 more seats per flight than the 757-200.
By using this aircraft, Delta will offer 55,738 seats between Atlanta and San Juan next month, surpassing competitors like Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines. While Frontier will provide 12,546 seats across 57 flights, Spirit offers 9,328 seats on 53 flights. Despite this competition, Delta’s widebody addition solidifies its position as a dominant carrier on this route.
Delta will permanently use the Boeing 767-300ER, and the aircraft will fly through October next year. United Airlines previously operated widebodies on this route, but Delta’s decision to make this change shows its commitment to providing more capacity and comfort for travelers.
With this upgrade, Delta strengthens its position on the highly competitive Atlanta to San Juan route, ensuring passengers enjoy more comfort and convenience on their flights.
