British Airways will end flights to Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport and Grenoble by October 2025. Therefore, the airline aims to boost profits and strengthen its presence in stronger markets. Moreover, British Airways wants to outpace growing competition from budget airlines in Europe. Because of these pressures, the airline chose to exit routes with low returns quickly.
Initially, British Airways launched Sabiha Gökçen in 2023 as a cheaper alternative to Istanbul Airport. However, the airline failed to draw enough premium passengers on this route. As a result, strong competition from budget carriers forced British Airways to rethink its plans. Meanwhile, the Grenoble route served winter travelers heading to the Alps. But British Airways saw higher value in year-round routes with consistent demand. Thus, it decided to close these services and focus on stronger options.
Furthermore, British Airways faces ongoing aircraft availability challenges. Because of these problems, it had to adjust many routes quickly. By focusing on profitable services, the airline expects better financial results and stronger growth. Additionally, British Airways will keep flights to other key Alpine cities like Geneva and Zurich. So, travelers can still visit Istanbul through British Airways flights to Istanbul Airport, which remains a major hub.
Besides that, passengers with bookings after October 26 will receive alternative travel options. Thus, British Airways plans to make the transition smooth and keep passengers moving without trouble. Finally, the airline may resume these routes later if demand grows and fleet issues improve. With this strategy, British Airways aims to stay strong and maintain a solid place in top European markets.
