British Airways partnered with LanzaJet to boost sustainable aviation in the UK. They will build a cutting-edge facility at Teesside’s Wilton International site. Project Speedbird aims to produce over 90,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) yearly. This fuel will significantly reduce carbon emissions, helping the aviation sector reach decarbonization targets.
The facility will use LanzaJet’s ethanol-to-SAF technology. This technology powers the world’s first commercial ethanol-to-SAF plant in the US. With this partnership, British Airways and LanzaJet plan to produce SAF locally. The UK government backs the project with funding from the Advanced Fuels Fund. This initiative will lower carbon dioxide emissions by 230,000 tonnes yearly, equal to the emissions of 26,000 domestic flights.
The collaboration will boost local economies and create skilled jobs. It supports the UK’s shift to clean energy. This project lays the foundation for future sustainable aviation ventures in the country.
