British Airways has launched a bold initiative to become the largest buyer of carbon removals in the UK by 2030. This plan positions the airline as a global leader in sustainable aviation. By partnering with key organizations, British Airways aims to stimulate growth in the carbon removal market and significantly cut emissions.
To reach this goal, the airline plans to secure about one-third of its emissions reductions through carbon removal strategies by 2050. This commitment aligns with its broader target of net zero emissions by 2050, focusing on immediate actions by 2030.
British Airways has invested over £9 million in carbon removal credits under a six-year agreement. This funding will accelerate projects that capture and store carbon, bolstering the airline’s climate action strategy. One notable project in Scotland captures CO2 emissions from whisky distilleries and transforms them into sustainable building materials. Additionally, enhanced rock weathering techniques will sequester carbon for extended periods, enhancing the airline’s carbon removal portfolio.
The airline’s initiatives extend beyond the UK. It supports projects in Canada that remove carbon from rivers and oceans. It also backs a biochar project in India that empowers female farmers while improving soil health and crop yields. These diverse efforts showcase British Airways’ commitment to global carbon removal solutions.
In partnership with CUR8, a firm specializing in premium carbon removal credits, British Airways has secured 33,000 tonnes of credits. This partnership plays a crucial role in expanding the carbon removal sector, vital in the fight against climate change.
Besides CUR8, British Airways has acquired carbon removal credits from Climeworks, which operates Direct Air Capture facilities in Iceland. The airline has also partnered with 1PointFive for a facility in Texas. This broad approach highlights its dedication to innovative solutions in carbon reduction and removal.
British Airways is a member of The Earthshot Prize, which aims to scale groundbreaking environmental solutions. Through these collaborations, the airline seeks advancements in sustainable aviation fuels and alternative materials, while reducing reliance on single-use plastics.
Current projects include significant investments in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in the UK and USA. The airline plans to integrate about 1% of SAF into existing infrastructure at Heathrow. Additionally, British Airways is modernizing its fleet to enhance operational efficiency, achieving notable results in ground vehicle operations.
British Airways is taking significant steps toward leading the carbon removal sector by 2030. Moreover, through strategic investments and partnerships, the airline aims to set a benchmark in sustainability. Consequently, it is working toward a net-zero future.
