Cathay Pacific to Revamp Fleet with Bold New Aircraft Purchase

Cathay Pacific is in talks with Boeing for a significant aircraft order. The airline plans to update its long-haul fleet with options like the Boeing 787 and 777X. This follows a previous deal to renew its medium-haul fleet, marking the next step in its full fleet upgrade.

The airline aims to place the order next year. Cathay Pacific is prepared to spend around HK$100 billion ($128 million) on new aircraft. This investment will improve the efficiency and capabilities of its long-haul operations.

This potential deal with Boeing follows Cathay’s recent purchase of Airbus A330neo aircraft. In August, the airline secured 30 A330-900neos to modernize its regional fleet. These aircraft will serve both regional and long-haul routes, expanding Cathay’s capacity.

Although the airline recently chose Airbus, Boeing still has a chance to secure a deal for its long-haul fleet. Currently, Boeing jets make up 37% of Cathay Pacific’s fleet. The upcoming talks over the 787 and 777X could help Boeing maintain its position.

Cathay Pacific has already ordered 21 Boeing 777-9s. If Boeing secures the new order, it will complete Cathay’s fleet renewal. This move highlights Cathay Pacific’s drive to stay competitive in the fast-evolving aviation market.
