A routine flight with Mexican low-cost airline Volaris took an unexpected turn when a passenger tried to hijack the plane. This caused a forced diversion and significant delays. Let’s dive into the details of the alarming event and what happened next.
The flight, Volaris flight Y4-3041, was traveling from Bajío International Airport to Tijuana International. The flight, which normally operates daily, had a delay of over four hours before taking off. Shortly after reaching cruising altitude, a passenger tried to hijack the aircraft and divert it to the United States. However, the crew quickly responded, following standard security procedures. The flight diverted to Guadalajara, where authorities arrested the passenger.
The reason behind the passenger’s actions remains unclear, but reports suggest the 31-year-old man had faced threats. As the plane was still early in the flight, the man allegedly assaulted a flight attendant and tried to breach the cockpit. In response, the flight crew acted quickly to protect everyone on board.
The aircraft landed in Guadalajara, and the authorities arrested the man. Despite the diversion, the remaining passengers continued their journey to Tijuana, but the flight was significantly delayed. After almost four hours on the ground, the plane resumed its flight and arrived at 12:19 local time, more than eight hours late.
The aircraft, an Airbus A320-200, is one of 43 in the Volaris fleet. Although this event was dramatic, the airline emphasized that passenger and crew safety is its top priority. Volaris took the necessary steps to ensure the passenger faced legal consequences while allowing the flight to continue.
