Delta 737 Returns to Sacramento After Engine Trouble

A Delta Air Lines Boeing 737-900ER made an unexpected return to Sacramento shortly after takeoff due to engine troubles. The flight, originally destined for Minneapolis/St. Paul, turned around when the crew detected a mechanical issue with one of the aircraft’s two CFM56 engines. Fortunately, the plane landed safely back at Sacramento International Airport without any injuries reported among the 165 passengers and crew.

Flight DL-2229 operates nonstop from Sacramento (SMF) to Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP), but yesterday’s journey proved more complicated than anticipated. The aircraft, registered as N818DA, is a 10.64-year-old model, delivered to Delta Air Lines in March 2014. This particular plane is owned by Park Aerospace Holdings and managed by Avolon.

As the flight departed from runway 35R, it climbed to approximately 18,400 feet. However, about 10 minutes post-takeoff, it ceased its ascent. The crew swiftly decided to return to SMF, landing approximately 20 minutes after departure.

In an update on the situation, Delta Air Lines confirmed that the flight crew acted prudently. They chose a precautionary landing rather than declaring an emergency. Following the landing, passengers deplaned and experienced delays as Delta sought a replacement aircraft.

A new aircraft eventually departed at 13:43 PDT, landing in Minneapolis at 19:07 CDT, resulting in a significant delay of over seven hours. Meanwhile, the grounded Boeing 737-900ER remains at SMF for maintenance and assessment.

While engine issues can arise, CFM56 engines boast impressive reliability. These engines have a 99.96% dispatch reliability rate, making them a popular choice for airlines worldwide. Although issues can occur, they often do not jeopardize flight safety.

Ultimately, Delta Air Lines emphasizes the importance of passenger safety above all else. By returning to the airport, the crew ensured that their passengers remained safe and secure during the flight. Delta’s commitment to addressing any concerns promptly reflects their dedication to customer satisfaction.
