Delta Air Lines Hit Hard Financially by CrowdStrike Outage: What You Need to Know

Delta Air Lines, based in Atlanta, has revealed the significant financial impact of a major operational disruption in July. The incident, caused by a CrowdStrike outage, led to the cancellation of nearly 7,000 flights. As a result, Delta projects a potential revenue decrease of up to 4% for the third quarter.

Impact on Delta Air Lines’ Financials

The disruption has led to a revised revenue forecast for Delta Air Lines. The airline now expects its revenue for Q3 to be flat or increase by no more than 1%, a decline from the previously anticipated 2-4% growth. Capacity will likely fall short of earlier expectations, while costs per seat mile are projected to rise.

Revenue and Costs Adjustments

Delta has already disclosed a 45-cent reduction in earnings per share for the September quarter due to the outage. Despite this setback, the airline anticipates its revenue for the month will surpass initial guidance. The forecast includes lower fuel prices and adjusted non-fuel unit cost growth, which should be slightly above initial expectations.

Delta Air Lines faces ongoing challenges related to the outage, including a legal battle with CrowdStrike over the incident. The airline has claimed significant losses, including $500 million from the disruption. However, Delta believes its full-year earnings will remain strong, with projected earnings per share reaching or exceeding the midpoint of $6 to $7, excluding the impact of the outage.

Delta is seeking damages from CrowdStrike, citing delays in recovery compared to other airlines. CrowdStrike has apologized for the inconvenience but denies any gross negligence. As Delta navigates these challenges, it remains focused on maintaining its financial stability and meeting its earnings guidance for the year.
