Instead of direct deliveries to the U.S., Delta re-routed new aircraft through international destinations like Tokyo and Quebec.
This clever move helped Delta Air Lines avoid the 10% tariffs imposed during the Trump-era trade conflict. The aircraft first entered service in non-U.S. locations, then flew into the American market. That sequence meant they no longer qualified as “new imports” under strict U.S. customs rules. As a result, Delta expanded its fleet while saving millions.
Delta’s method also changed how airports play into global logistics. Cities like Tokyo and Montreal now serve as key transfer points. These stopovers not only helped dodge tariffs but also brought new commercial relevance to these airports. Increased traffic boosted local economies and reshaped international aviation logistics.
Delta Air Lines further strengthened its position by sourcing jets from Airbus’s Canadian factory in Mirabel. U.S.-Canada trade laws treated these aircraft differently, offering Delta another tariff-free supply route. Meanwhile, Airbus also assembled aircraft in Alabama, which offered some domestic protection, though with limited capacity.
