Delta’s Growth in Austin Makes Travel Easier and More Frequent for Locals

Delta Air Lines has overtaken American Airlines at Austin Bergstrom, becoming the airport’s second-biggest airline. This marks a sharp shift in Texas aviation, driven by Delta’s nonstop route expansion and aggressive growth. Southwest Airlines still leads Austin’s market, but Delta Air Lines is narrowing the gap fast.

Travelers have shifted quickly as Delta Air Lines increased its nonstop connections. The airline added new routes to leisure destinations and major U.S. cities. Meanwhile, American Airlines removed over 30 nonstop routes from Austin, giving Delta more space to grow.

Since early 2023, Delta Air Lines has made bold moves. It launched nonstop flights to Cancun, Palm Springs, and San Jose del Cabo. At the same time, it picked up key domestic routes abandoned by American Airlines, including Orlando, Las Vegas, and Memphis. These efforts helped Delta gain more passengers than its rival in recent months.

Delta’s strategy clearly targets business and leisure travelers. Its flights now connect Austin with top hubs like New York, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis. These options give travelers more flexibility, making Delta a favorite in the region.

From January to April 2025, Delta Air Lines served one million passengers. American Airlines, in contrast, handled just slightly more. However, American’s shrinking route network shows a declining hold in Austin. Delta’s continued growth proves it aims for a dominant market position.

Austin’s airport continues to grow as one of the busiest in the U.S. As Delta Air Lines expands its presence, the rivalry at the airport heats up. American Airlines must now respond or risk losing even more ground.
