Sydney Airport is gearing up for a major aviation milestone this December. Turkish Airlines will launch its first-ever direct flights from Sydney to Istanbul, making travel to Europe from Sydney significantly easier.
New Non-Stop Service: What to Expect
Starting on 5 December 2024, Turkish Airlines will initially operate four weekly flights via Kuala Lumpur. These flights will soon transition to a direct, non-stop service. Sydney will become the only Australian city with a direct route to Istanbul.
Enhancing European Travel from Sydney
This new route offers travelers access to over 340 destinations worldwide through Turkish Airlines’ Istanbul hub. It promises a faster, more convenient journey compared to previous layover-based travel. The service will use the Airbus A350-900, featuring 329 seats in Business and Economy classes.
Economic Impact and Tourism Boost
The introduction of direct flights is expected to generate over $53 million in additional visitor spending in the first year. It will create approximately 290 new jobs, benefiting Sydney and the broader NSW region. This influx of international visitors is expected to boost spending at hotels, restaurants, and attractions.
Expanding Sydney’s Airline Options
Turkish Airlines joins a growing list of international carriers at Sydney Airport. Since 2022, airlines such as Bamboo Airways and SriLankan Airlines have expanded Sydney’s global connectivity. As international travel recovers, Sydney Airport reaffirms its status as Australia’s top international hub.
New Pick-Up Zone for Uber at Sydney Airport
In related news, Sydney Airport is partnering with Uber to introduce a new kerbside pick-up zone at the T1 International terminal. Starting on 24 September, passengers can use a six-digit PIN to book rides, reducing wait times by up to 50%. This new system aims to enhance convenience and minimize congestion during peak periods.
