South African Airways continues rebuilding with aggressive expansion across local and regional destinations. The airline now focuses on connecting South Africa with key cities to stimulate tourism, trade, and growth. After years of restructuring, South African Airways has taken clear steps to strengthen its post-pandemic recovery and reclaim market share. These new routes boost accessibility within South Africa and improve links to major destinations in Africa and beyond.
Recently, the airline revealed plans to operate new flights between Johannesburg and George, a route expected to drive tourism along the scenic Garden Route. It also targets high-demand connections like Cape Town to Durban and Johannesburg to East London, boosting mobility for business and leisure travelers alike. These moves enhance intercity connections and reduce pressure on ground infrastructure.
South African Airways also plans regional routes, including Johannesburg to Gaborone and Cape Town to Mauritius. The Gaborone service, launching in October 2025, will support both government and corporate travel between South Africa and Botswana. Meanwhile, the Cape Town-Mauritius connection, beginning in November 2025, will meet growing demand for tropical travel. This seasonal route benefits both countries economically, especially during peak travel months.
South African Airways will further resume long-haul flights to cities like Mumbai and Guangzhou. These intercontinental routes align with South Africa’s trade ambitions and help reconnect with important BRICS markets. By doing so, the airline aims to improve international connectivity while supporting export, tourism, and business ties.
The strategic expansion aligns with national goals, especially tourism promotion and regional integration. The airline now focuses on sustainable growth, operational efficiency, and route demand. With these new connections, South African Airways strengthens its network while supporting economic development in Southern Africa.
