Safety First: Emirates Prohibits Pagers and Walkie-Talkies After Explosions!

In response to recent security threats, Emirates has taken action by banning pagers and walkie-talkies on its flights. This decision follows remote detonations involving these devices linked to Hezbollah, which resulted in tragic casualties in Lebanon last month. The Dubai-based airline has stated that authorities will confiscate any devices found in passengers’ luggage to ensure safety.

The ban comes after a series of explosions caused by handheld radios used by Hezbollah during coordinated attacks from Israel. These incidents resulted in over 30 deaths and thousands of injuries, heightening security concerns. Emirates prohibits all travelers on flights to, from, or via Dubai from carrying pagers and walkie-talkies, whether in checked or cabin baggage.

In the immediate aftermath of the blasts, Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport (BEY) also imposed restrictions on these devices. Despite increased military activity near the airport, it appears undamaged. Lebanese officials noted that advanced technology helped hide explosives within the pagers’ batteries, making detection very difficult. Hezbollah typically avoids using cell phones due to the risk of surveillance, opting instead for older technology.

Additionally, Israel is believed to have compromised the supply chain for these devices by using shell companies to infiltrate production. Reports suggest Israel “laced” the lithium batteries with explosives. The Taiwanese company that manufactured the pagers has denied involvement in the incident, emphasizing the prevalence of counterfeit products.

Due to the escalating conflict in the region, Emirates updated its route suspensions. Flights to Iran and Iraq will remain suspended until further notice after a recent missile attack from Iran. Furthermore, flights to Lebanon are on hold until October 15, with possible extensions depending on the geopolitical climate. However, Emirates plans to resume flights to Jordan soon.

While some Middle Eastern airlines have cautiously resumed select services, many international carriers, including Air France KLM, Delta Airlines, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, and United Airlines, still avoid flying to Middle Eastern destinations due to ongoing safety concerns. As Emirates implements these measures, the airline prioritizes passenger safety amid rising tensions in the region.
