Ethiopian Airlines Ends Atlanta Service — Travelers Face New Detours

Ethiopian Airlines will stop its passenger flights to Atlanta on February 2, 2026, and it may not return to the route. The airline started the service in May 2023, and it now faces weak demand. Meanwhile, officials plan to reopen the route on June 1, 2026, but they will only resume if passengers return. Therefore, the route could disappear permanently if demand stays low.

The airline struggled to fill seats even before the travel restrictions arrived. However, the Trump-era rules limited easy entry for travelers from many African countries, and the airline lost more passengers. Furthermore, Ethiopian Airlines never secured a codeshare agreement with Delta Air Lines, and that missing partnership reduced ticket sales. As a result, the route became financially unsustainable, and the airline decided to pause operations.

Passengers and tourists now face new travel challenges. Atlanta serves as a major gateway to the southern United States, and travelers will now need more connections to reach East Africa. Business travelers will also need new itineraries, and families visiting relatives will face longer travel times. Additionally, Ethiopian nationals in the US will need alternative routes, which could increase travel costs and layover times.

The airline plans to keep the route pattern similar when it returns. It will likely increase flights during summer and then reduce them in winter. Yet, the company will monitor seat demand closely, and it may cancel the service again if travelers stay away. Meanwhile, Ethiopian Airlines will shift its Newark route to a Lomé stop, and it will increase weekly frequency. This change will also improve connections to West and Central Africa, and it will strengthen the airline’s network in that region.

Overall, Ethiopian Airlines faces tough decisions as it balances costs and demand. The Atlanta suspension highlights the pressures African carriers face when US travel rules and partnerships limit growth. Still, Ethiopian Airlines continues to expand across Africa and beyond, and it will adjust its US strategy based on demand trends.
