Etihad Airways will enhance its London Heathrow service with an additional daily flight for the summer 2025 season. This expansion, resulting from a slot leasing deal with American Airlines, allows Etihad to boost its presence on this key route.
Starting from March 30 to October 25, 2025, the UAE carrier will add a fifth daily flight between Abu Dhabi and London Heathrow. Because of the lease of American Airlines’ slot, Etihad can increase its flights to five daily. Currently, Etihad operates 28 weekly flights with a mix of Airbus A380s and Boeing 787s.
Moreover, Etihad will use the Airbus A321 for this new flight, shifting from its usual widebody aircraft. The A321, configured for 196 passengers, aligns with the airline’s plan to optimize its fleet for this busy route. Additionally, Etihad’s upcoming Airbus A321LR, with enhanced comfort, will soon support its European operations.
Furthermore, slot leasing at London Heathrow, one of the world’s busiest airports, highlights the competitive nature of the airline industry. Since limited slots are available, leasing offers a cost-effective way for airlines like Etihad to expand without the high cost of buying new slots outright.
As travel demand between the UAE and the UK rises, this additional flight will provide more connectivity for passengers. Thus, it strengthens Etihad Airways’ position as a top carrier on this route, giving travelers more flexible travel options.
Meanwhile, the UK government’s recent discussions on slot regulations aim to foster a more competitive market, potentially impacting future leasing deals. Consequently, as these changes occur, airlines like Etihad will adapt to maximize their operations at key airports like Heathrow.
