Passengers flying on budget airlines in Spain and Greece could soon enjoy a better experience. The EU plans to introduce a uniform carry-on bag policy across all its member states. As a result, travelers would avoid confusing rules and sudden charges.
Currently, airline policies vary widely. Some carriers offer free personal items, while others charge hefty fees. These inconsistencies often create stress at airport gates. Therefore, the EU aims to fix the problem with a new regulation.
The rule would allow one free under-seat bag on all EU-based airlines. The bag must fit under the seat and stay within 40x30x15cm. With this rule, passengers could pack without worrying about extra charges.
Furthermore, the regulation would apply to flights entering or leaving non-EU countries. If the airline operates under EU jurisdiction, it must follow the rule. That includes routes between the UK and EU countries.
This move comes as complaints against baggage fees increase. Some EU nations already fined airlines for charging extra for basic carry-ons. The fines reflect growing concern over unfair airline practices.
Additionally, the proposal could boost passenger trust. Many travelers feel frustrated by unclear and inconsistent policies. So, standard rules would make flying simpler and more transparent.
Although the European Parliament still needs to approve the law, the momentum is strong. If passed, the new rule would change air travel across Europe. The EU wants passengers to focus on their journey—not on last-minute baggage fees.
Low-cost airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air would need to follow the new policy. This would bring a long-awaited end to surprise charges. As air traffic grows across Europe, this change couldn’t come at a better time.
