The European Union (EU) has imposed new sanctions on three Iranian airlines, significantly impacting their operations. This decision arises as the EU accuses these carriers of facilitating weapon transfers to Russia. The sanctions include travel bans and asset freezes, specifically targeting airlines that support Russia’s military activities.
The sanctions affect Iran Air, Saha Airlines, and Mahan Air. Notably, the EU’s actions stem from these airlines delivering Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to Russia, aiding its aggressive war against Ukraine. The EU views these actions as a direct threat to European security, emphasizing that they represent a dangerous escalation in military support.
In its announcement, the EU clearly states that Iran’s airlines have played an instrumental role in transferring UAVs and related technologies to Russia. This military cooperation undermines global security. Hence, it heightens the need for stringent measures against Iran. Brussels aims to deter specific policies and activities that threaten stability and security in the region.
Of the three airlines, Iran Air remains the only one offering services to European destinations. As a government-owned airline, it operates under the Iranian Ministry of Infrastructure. Iran Air’s fleet consists of 37 aircraft, many of which remain inactive. It serves major European cities, including London, Milan, and Paris.
Saha Airlines primarily focuses on domestic flights within Iran. In contrast, Mahan Air operates a larger fleet and serves various international destinations. Despite their operational scope, neither Saha Airlines nor Mahan Air has routes to Europe.
The EU’s sanctions also target seven Iranian individuals, including a senior defense official. These individuals will face travel restrictions and asset freezes. Thus, they cannot access resources within the EU. The EU aims to disrupt the financial networks that support military actions against Ukraine.
Overall, the EU’s latest sanctions against Iranian airlines mark a significant step in addressing security concerns related to military cooperation with Russia. These measures reflect ongoing tensions and a commitment to uphold international law.
