The Boeing 737 MAX has become one of the most important aircraft globally, generating both excitement and controversy. By December, over 900 airports in more than 170 countries will operate the 737 MAX 8 or 737 MAX 9. On average, 5,490 roundtrip MAX flights occur every day worldwide, with the United States playing a vital role.
In fact, the US is the hub for Boeing 737 MAX activity. With airlines like Southwest, United, and American leading the charge, 44% of all MAX flights operate to, from, or within the US. This figure is seven times higher than in India, which ranks second in global MAX operations.
The United States dominates with eight out of the top 10 MAX airports worldwide. Together, these airports account for a remarkable 31% of all Boeing 737 MAX flights. Notably, Denver holds the top spot for MAX activity, thanks to extensive operations by Southwest and United. However, despite Denver’s dominance, the MAX only accounts for one in seven flights, with other aircraft models remaining more common.
Globally, Dubai has gained significant ground, rising to second place in MAX operations. Impressively, Dubai’s MAX flights have increased by 20% year-over-year, double the average growth rate of the top 10 airports. Additionally, Mexico City ranks third, with Aeromexico and American Airlines leading MAX flights.
Other airports around the world also stand out. London Stansted ranks first in Europe, primarily due to Ryanair’s MAX operations. In Central America, Panama City leads, while São Paulo Guarulhos holds the top spot in South America. In Africa, Addis Ababa, served by Ethiopian Airlines, takes the lead.
When it comes to the MAX 8, Dubai takes the lead, with several carriers operating this variant. On the other hand, the MAX 9 remains less popular, with Seattle leading the way due to Alaska Airlines’ large fleet. While both variants are widely deployed, their operations differ significantly across regions.
