Finnair Strengthens Mexican Connections, While Streamlining Routes for Better Service

Finnair has confirmed a new codeshare agreement with American Airlines, expanding its reach into Mexico. Starting January 23, the partnership will connect passengers from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to 12 destinations in Mexico. This collaboration aims to offer travelers from Finland and Northern Europe more convenient options, especially during the winter season when Mexico becomes a popular getaway.

Dallas plays a pivotal role in Finnair’s network, providing seamless connections through American Airlines’ hub. This development aligns with Finnair’s strategy to enhance its presence in the region. Finnair currently operates daily flights between Helsinki and Dallas, with plans to increase frequencies during the summer of 2025.

However, the new agreement comes with a slight change from the initial proposal submitted to the Department of Transportation (DOT) in November 2024. The codeshare now excludes Tampico, reducing the number of destinations from 13 to 12. Despite this adjustment, the partnership strengthens the connectivity between the United States and Mexico, making it easier for passengers to explore popular Mexican cities.

The revised agreement still offers robust connections, excluding Tampico, which had been part of the original plan. American Airlines, however, continues to operate flights to Tampico from Dallas, along with United Airlines, which offers services from Houston.

Finnair’s commitment to Dallas has grown since it first launched flights to the city in April 2022. The airline plans to maintain daily services, making Dallas a central hub for its operations. This move supports Finnair’s goal to provide better access to American Airlines’ extensive network and cater to the increasing demand for travel between Finland and Mexico.

In 2025, Finnair will focus on expanding its services to Dallas, with no direct flights to Mexico planned. The airline last served Puerto Vallarta in February 2019, indicating a strategic shift towards other destinations. This partnership with American Airlines is expected to enhance travel experiences for passengers seeking warmer destinations during colder months.
