Southwest Airlines is transforming air travel with a bold overhaul of its boarding and seating system. Starting January 27, 2026, the airline will introduce assigned seating and a structured boarding process across major routes, including Houston and Cancun. This shift ends its long-standing open-seating tradition and aligns the carrier with modern boarding standards while keeping its signature efficiency.
The change is part of Project USA, a company-wide initiative to enhance passenger comfort and speed up turnaround times. Southwest Airlines will assign every traveler a specific seat during check-in, eliminating the uncertainty of finding seats onboard. The new method, called “WILMA,” will organize boarding by seat location—window first, then middle, and finally aisle—while boarding from the rear of the aircraft forward. This strategy will minimize aisle traffic and reduce boarding delays, improving punctuality across flights.
Passengers will also notice a streamlined gate experience. Instead of nine boarding groups, Southwest will introduce two clearly defined lines to manage boarding flow. Premium travelers, frequent flyers, and those holding upgraded fares or qualifying cards will board first, while basic ticket holders can pay for early access. Updated boarding passes will display detailed seat information, helping passengers understand their seat type before they step onboard.
The airline expects this upgrade to improve overall passenger satisfaction and operational efficiency. Frequent flyers will gain earlier access to preferred seats, while families will find it easier to sit together under the new system. The changes signal a forward-thinking move that blends structure with convenience, ensuring smoother travel for everyone.
Southwest Airlines aims to modernize while maintaining its friendly approach to flying. Passengers should check in early, explore upgrade options, and review seat details before boarding to enjoy the new experience fully.
