Milan Malpensa Airport has launched a €30 million upgrade ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics. Therefore, it strengthens its role as Northern Italy’s main international entry point. The plan improves operations while preparing for record-breaking Olympic passenger volumes.
From January to March 2026, officials expect over 340,000 travelers to pass through Terminal 1. Consequently, this number matches peak summer traffic levels at the airport. As a result, Milan Malpensa Airport began a full redesign of Terminal 1 to handle this load.
The terminal will improve flow and comfort. For example, crews will upgrade arrival and departure zones with better design. In addition, they will install seating with charging ports, energy-saving lighting, and landscaped areas.
Many Olympic athletes will arrive with large and heavy winter gear. Therefore, the airport created special storage zones for sports equipment and large suitcases. On peak days, staff will process thousands of ski bags and oversized items.
In fact, the airport expects over 4,000 pieces of gear on its busiest Olympic day. To manage that, they installed custom racks and improved handling systems for fast movement.
Moreover, the airport expands passport control and entry systems to cut waiting times. It also renovates VIP lounges and replaces every door with energy-saving models. These enhancements support smooth movement across all spaces.
