Flying Vietnam Airlines or Vietjet? What You Must Know About the New Power Bank Rules

Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet have introduced strict new rules on power banks this month. Both airlines now prohibit passengers from using portable chargers during flights, reflecting wider safety concerns in global aviation. Lithium batteries inside these devices can overheat or ignite under pressure, creating serious risks in the air.

The updated policy still permits passengers to bring limited power banks in carry-on bags. However, travelers must keep the devices visible throughout the flight and cannot connect them to aircraft ports. The airlines want to reduce the chances of overheating, short circuits, or fires in the cabin.

Aviation authorities worldwide have increased scrutiny on lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries. These batteries power smartphones, laptops, and chargers but also react strongly to temperature changes and vibrations. Onboard environments often amplify these risks, which is why airlines have adopted tougher measures to safeguard flights.

The move by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet reflects a growing trend across Asia and beyond. Air Busan, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, and several other carriers already limit or prohibit in-flight power bank use. Japan even requires passengers to keep these devices visible at all times. These measures highlight how airlines prioritize safety as passenger numbers rise.

Travelers must now plan differently before boarding. They need to charge devices in advance and use available airport charging stations. Some aircraft still offer USB ports, but availability differs, so checking before flying is important. Passengers who rely on portable chargers during long journeys will need to adapt to these changes.

Although these restrictions may inconvenience some travelers, the broader aim is clear. Aviation leaders want to eliminate battery-related hazards and protect every passenger. By preparing early, travelers can reduce disruption and ensure safer journeys.
