Frankfurt Airport experienced a surge in travelers this September 2024, driven by high demand from America and the Far East. The airport welcomed 5.3 million passengers, with growth in traffic from regions like China, India, and Singapore. However, a drop in Middle East flights due to regional unrest slightly impacted the overall numbers.
In September 2024, the airport handled nearly 5.8 million passengers, a 1.2% increase compared to the previous year. Frankfurt saw domestic flights rise by 1.3%, while European routes grew by 2.6%. Nevertheless, intercontinental traffic dipped by 1.1%, primarily due to a sharp 27.8% decline in flights to the Middle East. Despite this, Frankfurt benefitted from a remarkable increase in travel to the Far East, where China alone saw a 30.4% rise.
While September figures were strong, total passenger numbers remain 12.9% below 2019 pre-pandemic levels. Over the first nine months of 2024, Frankfurt welcomed around 46.7 million travelers, reflecting a 4.9% increase over 2023, though still trailing behind 2019 by 13.8%.
Flight movements also increased, with 39,802 take-offs and landings in September, rising by 0.4%. Additionally, the total maximum take-off weight grew by 0.4% to approximately 2.5 million tons. Despite challenges, Frankfurt continues to recover steadily, supported by growing demand in various regions.
Across Fraport’s international portfolio, many airports reported growth in September. Notably, Slovenia’s Ljubljana Airport saw an 11% passenger rise. However, some regions faced disruptions, such as Brazil’s Porto Alegre Airport, which experienced a sharp decline due to severe flooding.
In Peru, Lima Airport recorded significant growth with a 13.2% increase in travelers compared to September 2023. Fraport’s regional airports in Greece also saw a rise, serving 5.3 million passengers with a 3.7% growth rate. Meanwhile, Antalya Airport in Turkey handled about 5 million travelers, reflecting a modest 2.1% increase.
Overall, Fraport airports handled 19.4 million passengers in September 2024, marking a 0.7% year-on-year growth. Frankfurt continues to play a vital role in this recovery, benefiting from sustained demand across key regions, though it still faces challenges in fully reaching pre-pandemic figures.
Looking ahead, Frankfurt’s steady climb in passenger traffic shows promise, positioning it well for continued growth despite regional setbacks.
