Alaska Airlines enhances its commitment to sustainability by reintroducing a popular feature for frequent flyers. Moreover, the Seattle-based airline now enables travelers to purchase Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) credits, allowing them to earn elite-qualifying miles (EQMs) in the process. Consequently, this initiative, a part of Alaska Airlines’ broader sustainability goals, enables travelers to actively participate in reducing carbon emissions in aviation.
Alaska Airlines makes it easy for passengers to buy SAF credits directly on its website. Customers earn 500 EQMs for every $100 spent on these credits, with a maximum cap of 5,000 EQMs. This limited-time offer runs until December 31st, allowing Mileage Plan members to accumulate miles while supporting environmentally friendly fuel alternatives.
Additionally, Alaska Airlines emphasizes that funds from SAF purchases contribute directly to the adoption of sustainable fuels. In 2022, nearly 9% of members maximized their contributions, supporting over half a million gallons of SAF. Consequently, this initiative aligns with Alaska Airlines’ broader commitment to reduce its environmental impact while helping members achieve elite status.
Travelers can also support SAF during flight bookings, selecting an amount to offset emissions based on their trip’s projected carbon footprint. This integration streamlines the process, thus making it convenient for eco-conscious travelers to make a difference.
Alaska Airlines has ambitious sustainability goals, targeting net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Its five-part strategy encompasses operational efficiency, fleet upgrades, SAF investment, new technology, and effective carbon removal strategies. The airline aims to inspire other industry players to embrace sustainable practices.
Alaska Airlines stands at the forefront of aviation sustainability. Consequently, by allowing passengers to purchase SAF credits and earn miles, the airline empowers travelers to contribute to a greener future. This initiative not only promotes environmental responsibility but also enhances the travel experience for eco-conscious individuals.
