Hawaiian Airlines moves to a new spot at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The airline transitioned from the International Terminal to Harvey Milk Terminal 1. This move strengthens its partnership with Alaska Airlines following their merger.
The relocation plays a key role in Hawaiian Airlines’ integration with Alaska Airlines. After Alaska finalized its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines nearly three months ago, it began optimizing operations across airports, including SFO. Furthermore, they will continue this process with more co-locations at other U.S. airports in the near future.
On Tuesday, Hawaiian Airlines began using Alaska’s check-in counters in Terminal 1. This co-located facility, therefore, streamlines check-ins and airport operations, improving the passenger experience. The relocation follows Alaska’s consolidation of operations at Terminal 1 in June. As a result, the airline introduced automated bag drops, making the check-in process faster and more efficient.
Alaska Airlines is the largest domestic carrier at Terminal 1. It beats out American Airlines and Delta, among others. In addition, Hawaiian Airlines now joins Alaska in offering flights to more than 130 destinations, both domestic and international.
As part of the merger, Hawaiian Airlines continues to operate overlapping routes with Alaska Airlines. For example, flights between Hawaii and major U.S. cities still run smoothly. However, Hawaiian will discontinue its Maui to San Diego route next summer, leaving Alaska Airlines to serve that market.
This move marks just the beginning. In fact, Hawaiian Airlines plans to relocate at five more airports by 2025. This will, in turn, improve the travel experience and align operations between the two airlines.
The changes at SFO represent the start of this integration. Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines will continue to optimize their operations, aiming for a unified system by 2025.
