On-time performance metrics from the US Department of Transportation highlight Hawaiian Airlines as the leading domestic carrier. According to the latest Air Travel Consumer Report for August 2024, Hawaiian Airlines achieved an impressive on-time arrival rate of 86.8%. This performance surpasses the industry average and demonstrates their commitment to punctuality.
In August 2024, US airlines operated 647,205 domestic flights, reflecting a 2.61% increase compared to August 2023. However, this number represents a slight decline from July 2024’s 657,233 flights. Notably, out of 660,639 scheduled flights, airlines canceled 2% or 13,434 flights, a slight improvement from the previous month.
Performance data shows that while delays are frustrating, high cancellation rates indicate reliability issues. Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines tied for second place, each canceling just 0.9% of their flights. Meanwhile, Hawaiian Airlines, with a cancellation rate of 1.5%, maintained a strong performance.
Conversely, JetBlue Airways, Spirit Airlines, and Frontier Airlines faced significant challenges, canceling 4.5%, 4.0%, and 3.3% of their flights, respectively. This stark contrast highlights the importance of reliable service in maintaining customer satisfaction.
In addition to cancellations, the report also sheds light on baggage handling. Carriers mishandled 0.64% of the 42.5 million bags processed, slightly improving from previous months. However, the handling of mobility devices remains a concern, with 1,004 wheelchairs and scooters mishandled.
The report also notes two incidents involving animals during air travel in August. The Department of Transportation is actively working to enhance reporting standards for these incidents.
Overall, Hawaiian Airlines stands out for its strong commitment to on-time performance, significantly enhancing the travel experience for its passengers.
