Hong Kong Airlines will cut its Hong Kong to Seoul route service in half starting June 11, 2025. The airline will operate only one daily round-trip flight instead of two, affecting passengers traveling through summer and early fall. Although this reduced schedule lasts until October 25, 2025, the airline will temporarily resume the second daily flight between September 27 and October 12.
This change highlights a shift in the airline’s operational priorities, likely due to lower demand or internal cost evaluations. Hong Kong Airlines appears to be streamlining its routes, especially on flights that generate less profit. As a result, travelers may face challenges in securing tickets, especially during popular travel periods like holidays or events in Seoul.
Business travelers, who rely on flexible schedules, may experience scheduling difficulties. They might need to consider alternate flight options or other carriers to maintain efficiency. For those flying to Seoul for leisure, fewer daily flights could disrupt itineraries. They may need to adjust travel dates or consider different departure times.
This route reduction could also reshape the competition. Airlines like Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, and Cathay Pacific may attract passengers looking for more availability and flexible pricing. As travelers switch carriers, competitive pressure may rise, prompting changes in fare strategies or service improvements.
The change also impacts Hong Kong’s tourism appeal. Fewer flights could reduce the flow of South Korean tourists into the city, affecting both leisure and business travel sectors. The ripple effect may reach hotels, restaurants, and local attractions dependent on steady visitor traffic.
This move may also shift some passengers toward connecting flights through cities like Tokyo, Taipei, or Shanghai. Although less direct, these alternatives offer flexibility. As travelers adapt, they may begin to explore different carriers or routes that better match their preferences, prices, or sustainability concerns.
