Iberia is expanding its flight schedule between Madrid and San Juan, increasing to 11 weekly flights from October 2025. As a result, Puerto Rico’s global connectivity will improve, while its economy will receive a projected $32 million boost. This expansion caters to both business and leisure travelers, positioning Puerto Rico as a prime destination for European tourists.
The airline will operate these flights using Airbus A321XLR and A330-200 aircraft. Notably, the A321XLR, designed for long-haul routes with improved fuel efficiency, will provide daily service. At the same time, the A330-200 will operate four times per week, offering a comfortable journey with premium seating options. Because of these aircraft choices, Iberia can enhance passenger experience while meeting growing demand.
This expansion follows a strategic agreement between Iberia and Puerto Rico, which aims to attract more European visitors. During a major tourism event in Madrid, both parties committed to promoting Puerto Rico as a must-visit destination. Consequently, Iberia will showcase Puerto Rico in its loyalty programs, in-flight entertainment, and marketing campaigns across key European markets.
The increased flights bring significant economic benefits. More direct connections from Spain will encourage higher visitor spending on accommodations, dining, and cultural experiences. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with Puerto Rico’s tourism goals, which focus on attracting high-value travelers who contribute more to the local economy.
Iberia’s decision reflects confidence in Puerto Rico’s tourism potential. Since the island has a strategic location, cultural ties to Spain, and U.S. infrastructure, it remains an attractive destination for European travelers. If demand continues to grow, additional routes from cities like Barcelona or Lisbon may follow.
Ultimately, this expansion strengthens Puerto Rico’s aviation network, ensuring easier access for international tourists. Moreover, Iberia’s commitment to the Caribbean market signals a new era of travel opportunities, benefiting both travelers and the local economy.
