The Lufthansa Group has confirmed that ITA Airways will leave SkyTeam and join the Star Alliance in the first half of 2026. Lufthansa acquired a 41% stake in ITA Airways, which initiated this transition. This move opens new opportunities for ITA Airways, allowing it to connect with Lufthansa Group’s vast network, which includes airlines like Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, and Austrian Airlines.
Starting February 3, ITA Airways passengers can earn and redeem loyalty points on flights with Lufthansa Group airlines. As ITA Airways integrates with Lufthansa Group, passengers can access over 250 destinations worldwide. The deal enhances convenience for travelers, making it easier to connect between Italy and long-haul destinations.
In addition, ITA Airways will move to new terminals at Frankfurt and Munich airports. This change will reduce transfer times and improve the overall passenger experience. Passengers will also gain access to 130 Lufthansa Group lounges around the world. Lufthansa Cargo and ITA Airways will strengthen their joint operations in airfreight.
Though the European Commission initially raised concerns, Lufthansa finalized the acquisition of ITA Airways on January 17. Lufthansa expects ITA Airways to become profitable by the end of 2025, benefiting passengers and employees alike. The integration promises mutual success, reinforcing the airline’s global position.
This strategic partnership starts a significant transformation for ITA Airways. With closer ties to Lufthansa, ITA Airways aims to expand its global reach and strengthen its market presence.
