Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) remains a vital gateway for travelers heading to the Asia-Pacific region. Over the past year, it served a remarkable 4.6 million passengers from the top 30 cities. This impressive number underscores LAX’s strategic position as a major hub, alongside San Francisco International Airport, for trans-Pacific travel. An analysis of booking data, including direct and connecting flights, reveals a strong demand for travel to Asia from Los Angeles.
Tokyo tops the list of destinations, attracting approximately 956,000 roundtrip travelers. Following closely, Seoul welcomed 562,000 passengers, while Manila saw around 383,000 travelers. However, despite the robust overall passenger volume, Chinese cities have faced a significant decline compared to pre-pandemic levels. Overall, Los Angeles experienced more than 6,000 passengers traveling each way daily to these Asia-Pacific destinations.
The diverse travel preferences are clear, with Sydney, Ho Chi Minh City, and Taipei among the favorites. Notably, Ho Chi Minh City stands out as the largest unserved market from Los Angeles, with 255,000 roundtrip passengers. This substantial traffic indicates strong potential for future direct flights. However, the long-distance of 7,098 nautical miles presents a challenge for airlines.
The economics of these routes can be complicated. Although passenger demand is evident, the average one-way fare of $613 suggests limited premium traffic. This premium traffic is essential for airlines to justify non-stop flights. Nevertheless, the possibility of future connections remains hopeful, especially since Vietnam Airlines already services routes to San Francisco.
Los Angeles International Airport sees impressive passenger numbers to Asia-Pacific cities. Additionally, there are opportunities for expansion, particularly in underserved markets like Ho Chi Minh City. As travel demand continues to grow, LAX is well-positioned to connect the U.S. with vibrant destinations across Asia.
