London Gatwick Airport reached new milestones in 2024, welcoming 43.2 million passengers and strengthening its airline network. As a result, the airport saw a 5.7% rise in travelers compared to the previous year. With 57 carriers now operating, Gatwick set a new benchmark for connectivity. This rapid expansion fueled financial growth, with total revenue soaring to £1.13 billion, an 11.3% increase. Notably, strong aeronautical income, thriving retail sales, and rising parking revenues played a crucial role in this remarkable performance.
At the same time, the airport made major strides in infrastructure and sustainability. The UK government signaled support for Gatwick’s Northern Runway project, a £2.2 billion investment that will create 14,000 jobs and inject £1 billion into the economy each year. Meanwhile, construction continued on a £140 million Pier 6 expansion, which will enhance passenger experience by reducing bus transfers and adding eight new aircraft gates. Furthermore, a £60 million security upgrade introduced advanced screening technology, allowing travelers to keep liquids and electronics in their bags.
In addition, Gatwick strengthened its global connectivity by launching new routes to key international cities. In 2024, the airport expanded its long-haul destinations to 53, linking Europe to Asia, the Americas, and Africa. Consequently, this growth, combined with 20 new retail openings, enriched the passenger experience and reinforced Gatwick’s position as a leading travel hub.
Moreover, the airport achieved outstanding service standards, with 99% of performance targets met. Notably, over 95% of travelers passed security in under five minutes, highlighting Gatwick’s operational efficiency. At the same time, sustainability remained a top priority, with a 90% cut in carbon emissions from on-site vehicles. Thanks to the shift to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, Gatwick significantly reduced its environmental impact and reinforced its commitment to greener operations.
As 2024 unfolded, London Gatwick Airport continued to break records and drive innovation. With ambitious expansion plans, improved passenger services, and a strong focus on sustainability, the airport solidified its role as a key player in global aviation.
