Lufthansa Seals €325M Deal with ITA Airways for 41% Stake

Lufthansa has finalized a €325 million deal with ITA Airways, acquiring a 41% stake in the Italian airline. This move opens up global expansion opportunities for both carriers.

The partnership between ITA Airways and Lufthansa marks a major milestone in European aviation. Announced in May 2023, the agreement recently gained approval from the European Commission after a thorough review. To meet regulatory conditions, the deal included concessions like releasing airport slots to other airlines in Italy.

With this acquisition, ITA Airways will join the Lufthansa Group, which includes airlines like SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings. This expansion will boost the group’s market presence and profits.

In addition to the financial aspects, ITA Airways will see a leadership change. Jörg Eberhart, previously the CEO of Air Dolomiti, will become ITA’s CEO. Sandro Pappalardo will assume the role of chairman, bringing valuable aviation and tourism experience. The board will feature Antonella Ballone, Efrem Angelo Valeriani, and Lorenza Maggio, who will contribute to the airline’s growth.

The deal strengthens Lufthansa’s position in the European market and positions ITA Airways for future success. The collaboration will leverage synergies across the group, improving efficiency and customer service. This partnership will help both airlines capture new growth opportunities in global aviation.

This acquisition represents more than a financial transaction; it aligns the strategic goals of both airlines. The partnership between Lufthansa and ITA Airways will drive profits and boost their competitiveness in the aviation industry.
