Greece is bracing for massive travel disruptions as a general strike on February 28, 2025, forces mass cancellations across the country. As air traffic controllers and transport workers walk out, aviation and public transportation will come to a halt. Since thousands of passengers are affected, major airlines have confirmed full flight cancellations, leading to significant delays and scheduling issues.
The strike marks the second anniversary of the tragic Tempe rail disaster, which claimed 57 lives in February 2023. Because labor unions believe negligence and weak safety measures caused the crash, they demand stricter regulations and better working conditions. Therefore, this widespread protest aims to hold authorities accountable and push for urgent reforms.
Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air, and SKY Express have already announced complete cancellations of domestic and international flights. Since the suspension will last from 00:01 to 23:59 on February 28, travelers should prepare for major disruptions. While most flights will not operate, limited services to Larnaca, Yerevan, and Cairo might still run. Meanwhile, Athens International Airport and regional airports will remain shut, further worsening the travel chaos.
Additionally, the impact of the strike will extend beyond February 28. Because airlines need time to adjust schedules, flights on February 27 may change. Moreover, passengers should expect delays on March 1 as operations gradually return to normal. For this reason, travelers should check flight updates, rebook if needed, and prepare for unexpected changes.
Beyond aviation, the general strike will disrupt public transport, rail services, and ferry routes. In Athens, metro trains, buses, and trams will run on limited schedules or shut down entirely. Furthermore, rail services will remain suspended, while ferry delays and cancellations may affect island connections.
Ultimately, this coordinated strike highlights growing frustration among workers demanding justice and improved safety measures. Since Greece braces for another day of upheaval, travelers must stay informed and plan ahead to navigate the disruptions.
