Aeromexico saw a notable drop in passenger numbers in February 2025, which directly impacted Mexico’s tourism sector. The airline transported 1.76 million passengers, marking a 6.7% decline from the same period in 2024. As a result, key tourist destinations such as Mexico City, Cancun, and Guadalajara felt the effects. Domestic travel fell by 8.5%, while international traffic dropped by 2.6%, signaling a shift in travel demand.
To respond to these changes, the airline adjusted its capacity to match evolving travel trends. Total available seat kilometers (ASKs) dipped by 0.4%. However, international ASKs rose by 1.8%, showing a stronger focus on global routes. Meanwhile, domestic ASKs fell by 4.9%, reflecting reduced demand within Mexico. Revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs) also declined by 4.5%, further highlighting the shift in travel behavior.
Mexico plays a crucial role in Latin America’s aviation market, and Aeromexico’s operational changes could shape broader regional travel patterns. Since the airline is a founding member of SkyTeam, its connectivity across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia remains essential. Therefore, any shift in its passenger flow may influence global tourism networks and business travel.
Domestic tourism suffered the most from the traffic decline. Inflation, airfare fluctuations, and evolving travel habits may have contributed to weaker demand. As Mexico heavily relies on domestic tourists, this drop could affect businesses catering to local travelers. On the other hand, Aeromexico’s increased focus on global routes signals the country’s importance as a major travel destination.
Looking ahead, future trends will depend on how the airline adapts to changing demand. To stay competitive, Aeromexico must refine its strategies. Through increased marketing, fare adjustments, and expanded partnerships, the airline could regain lost momentum. Since the aviation industry continues to evolve, Aeromexico’s response will determine its position in the global tourism landscape.
