Muan International Airport to Remain Closed Following Jeju Air Crash

The South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) extended the closure of Muan International Airport (MWX) until January 14. This extension follows the investigation into the Jeju Airlines crash and issues involving Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The December 29 crash killed many, prompting authorities to examine aircraft safety protocols more closely.

MOLIT is examining key components of the aircraft, such as the CFM56-7B engines. These parts were moved to a secure hangar. Efforts to recover debris from the crash site continue. The Jeju Airlines plane was attempting a belly landing at Muan International when it crashed into a concrete structure and burst into flames. Authorities are working to determine the crash’s cause and improve safety procedures.

The Ministry identified the crash victims. A total of 179 people, including passengers and crew, died in the incident. Authorities used fingerprints and DNA for identification. The two surviving flight attendants remain in the hospital. The South Korean government provides ongoing support to the victims’ families, including psychological care and temporary housing. A joint memorial service will honor the victims.

MOLIT also launched a review of all South Korean Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The country’s fleet, including 101 of these planes, will undergo extensive inspections. These checks cover maintenance records, operational procedures, and staff management. The inspection process will continue until January 10. Authorities are also reviewing safety at 13 major airports, including Seoul’s Incheon International and Jeju International Airports.

Jeju Airlines faces growing scrutiny after the crash, raising concerns about aircraft safety. The government is conducting thorough checks to prevent future accidents and protect passengers.
